Galaxy MagazineHarry was very tickled by the fact that he was going to have a story published in Galaxy Science Fiction Magazine; he regarded himself as far more a Myth Maker/Fable Weaver than anything else--his songwriting came out of that, and recording was a total fluke, really done as demo sessions to get the songs sold--covered by top groups and artists. Well, heck, when he confessed that as a kid, he'd always wanted to be a Galaxy writer, I said, "Hey, me too...I was stuck reading the "slush pile" of unsolicited manuscripts! "So, listen, buddy, why don't you send up a story? I've got stuff from Dave Kyle, Forry Ackerman and a veritable Galaxy of topnotch pro writers; I'm reading for issue number two!" After some reassurance that he didn't have to measure up to the likes of his companions in that issue (I think he did) -- Sprague deCamp, Jacqueline Lichtenberg, Robert Sheckley, K.D. Wentworth, Chad Oliver, Janet Gluckman, Robert Silverberg, Jean-Marie Stine, Don Webb, Bjo Trimble, Chuck Rothman, Horace L. Gold, and the Dragon Lady Herself, Evelyn E. Smith, he finally sent it via snailmail, which is all we had then, kids...and the rest is history; you'll find it in the second issue of Galaxy Large Format Pulp, which was published in the March/April '94 issue of Galaxy; and yes, he did see the proofs and the Kelly Freas cover! You can still buy a set of Galaxy pulps on eBay , signed, for about $50-75 for all 8 issues or visit the Galaxy Offices directly. |
